SUNRISE, Fla. — The most valuable player of all\u002Dstar weekend was the beach.
The all-star game is not a money-maker for the NHL, which is normally in the business of making money. It’s a weekend ostensibly set up to pay back sponsors for all they put into the league. “Branding,” commissioner Gary Bettman calls it … An all-star game in Florida in the middle of winter, though, what a concept! It became a rather fine destination for hockey family and friends.
Keon was voted the top Leafs player in history in 2016 … Why would anyone of sound mind and financial wherewithal trade for Kyrie Irving? … They dressed Mitch Marner up in a Miami Vice suit and Carol Vadnais skates for Friday’s skill competition at the NHL all-star game. Never mind that Miami Vice’s run on television ended seven years before Marner was born and Vadnais last wore white skates for the California Golden Seals 51 years ago.
