From simmonssteve: Poutine hotdog the star of Blue Jays home opener

And of course, this being Toronto, the first question asked when walking into Rogers Centre on Tuesday night was not the Fergie Olver classic ‘How bout those Blue Jays?’ but ‘What are the Leafs doing with their goalies?’

And then it was time to play some baseball. After ceremony after ceremony against the Detroit Tigers. The one-time Blue Jays rival. But the final week of 1987 seems about a lifetime or two ago and so does important baseball against the rather tepid Tigers. But on opening day, you find your mind racing, and 100 years ago can seem like yesterday and so very personal to baseball fans of any age.

If nothing else, baseball is the best of all talking sports. You play today and you played yesterday and you play tomorrow and in between there are stories to tell. Like in 1988, when Kelly Gruber began the season with two homers at home in a 17-run outburst by the Jays. Like in 2003, when Roger Clemens, no longer a Blue Jay but still a supporter of the enhanced products, pitched against a kid named Roy Halladay. One of them would wind up in the Hall of Fame.

Don Mattingly has no real story to tell of his favourite home opener but he will tell you about his least favourite. He was standing on the turf of Rogers Centre on Tuesday, wearing a Blue Jays cap and a Blue Jays uniform and you have to look twice to make sure this was correct.Article contentYou think Don Mattingly, you think Donnie Baseball, you think New York Yankees, you think knocking-on-the-door Hall of Famer. You think legend.

The home opener he laughs about, in retrospect, came at Yankee Stadium, 1983. His first full year in the bigs. He was playing against a Detroit team that was managed by Sparky Anderson, pitched by Jack Morris, led in the infield by Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker.
