Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills laughs with Gabe Davis and Latavius Murray.SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for September 6, 2023 | SaltWireWide Right came before the Joe Carter home run, before the Doug Gilmour wrap-around playoff goal and before the Buffalo Bills followed up that missed field goal with three more Super Bowl losses.
Today, a 47-yard field goal is almost a chip-shot. Everybody can make them — on grass, on turf, anywhere really. But back then, on the grass field in Tampa, it was probably more of a 50-50 kick. Wide Right happened 33 years ago and somehow it still seems like yesterday. And after the four straight losses, the Bills have been never back to the Super Bowl. They didn’t get there before Wide Right and haven’t gotten there again after the four-year run.
The year before, they lost in overtime to Kansas City in a playoff game that still defies explanation. Allen, having passed for more than 4,000 yards most seasons while running for close to 800 yards himself while scoring seven touchdowns a year, is almost impossible to defend.
