Survivors of church sexual abuse hung ribbons on the gates of St Mary’s ahead of the funeral service tomorrow, but security guards tried to remove them.

The body of Cardinal George Pell lies in state at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney in readiness for tomorrow’s funeral, as the highly contested legacy of Australia’s most senior Catholic figure was marked in different ways on Wednesday.

Those outside the church had their own, different, moment of quiet. Survivors of sexual abuse in the church from Sydney, Newcastle and Ballarat spent the morning tying ribbons to the fence of the church in an act of remembrance of the lives lost and hurt by clerical abuse. “How is this doing your job?” one upset protester began yelling as the guards cut off the colourful strips. “We’re just on a fence.”

Thousands will gather tomorrow for the cardinal’s funeral, before his body is lowered into the crypt below. The cathedral is open for the public to see him lying in state on Wednesday.Loading
