The upcoming video game Silent Hill: Townfall, developed by Glasgow-based Screen Burn Interactive, will be set on the fictional island of St Amelia and inspired by the landscapes of Scotland, particularly villages on the east coast such as St Monans. Developers have released a trailer and behind-the-scenes footage showcasing their inspiration.
There have been many big-budget blockbusters films in recent years that were shot in Scotland , from Avengers: Infinity War to Skyfall. However, there are far less major video games out there that are set in or inspired by the country—until now that is.
As reported by the Daily Record , it was announced on Thursday, February 12, that the setting of the upcoming video game Silent Hill: Townfall was inspired by Scotland. The game, which is being developed by Glasgow-based company Screen Burn Interactive, will see the player take control of a man who finds himself in a deserted town. The highly anticipated video game will take place on the fictional island of St Amelia, with developers stating that it will be 'set against the cold, isolated backdrop of Scotland'. Screen Burn Interactive revealed that villages on the east coast of the country served as inspiration when making the game, including St Monans in Fife. Alongside a new trailer for Silent Hill Townfall, a video detailing the video game's development was also shared. In the footage, staff working on the game journeyed from Glasgow to St Monans to see how the village in real life compares to how it appears in the game. Home to a population of around 1,100 people, it is known for its three-piered harbour that is overlooked by charming fishermen's cottages that feature painted walls and red roofs. In the clip, which was uploaded onto the Silent Hill YouTube account, Screen Burn Interactive staff members Paul Abbott, Linda Stenback, and brothers Graeme and Jon McKellan can be seen walking around St Monans and describing how it inspired Silent Hill: Townfall. Jon states: 'So we're in St Monans, this is the harbour town, and was the first place that we built for the game. When I started to write the story about what this town was, what happened to this town, the isolation was a big factor. 'There's like an existential dread that comes with that. Silent Hill has always had a sense of not being able to leave the town, and face why you're there. 'That isolation isn't just for the protagonist but also for the town.' QA lead for Townfall Linda Stenback added: 'It's surreal, I think it's because a lot of stuff are so similar to in-game. Even the slanted walls, the colours, where the benches are placed is exactly the same as in-game.' The developers also noted the various narrow alleyways that are located around St Monans, with Graeme stating: 'They're really fun to walk up and down in real life, but when you've got a monster chasing you, it's just not a nice place to be.' He continues: 'You're mimicking several hundred years worth of life, that's what we aim to do. A lot of the time, the player will just sort of walk around and absorb it and won't know why it feels like a real place. 'But the effort that we've put in will make them feel like it's a real place, and it will give them that sense of history.' Despite being the setting of an unsettling horror game, St Monans is the perfect destination for a day out. Aside from its moody and beautiful scenery, there are a number of beauty spots to check out—as well as numerous popular food and drink spots to head to. Among the most notable landmarks around town are the St Monans Tidal Pool and the St Monans Windmill. The former is a historic outdoor swimming pool nestled against the water's edge, while the St Monans Windmill is the last remaining windmill in Fife—offering spectacular views out across the Firth of Forth. Elsewhere, another highlight of the village is the St Monans Auld Kirk, which has been a place of worship since the 13th century and is one the few remaining medieval churches in Scotland still in use. With structures such as as St Monans Auld Kirk, it is easy to see why Screen Burn Interactive were inspired by St Monans. Meanwhile, when it comes to places to eat, St Monans is home to a number of restaurants and cafés. Popular picks among locals and tourists alike include the East Pier Smokehouse seafood restaurant, the Giddy Gannet café, and the award-winning Craig Millar @ 16 West End.
