No anniversary\u002Drelated events or press conferences were planned on Parliament Hill Tuesday, a year since the government invoked the act
Even MPs who opposed the use of the Emergencies Act “recognize that it may not be the most popular position to have to have opposed it,” Zwibel said. The Liberal government used the extraordinary powers in the act for the first time ever to break up the Freedom Convoy protests, in which protesters in trucks and other vehicles had blocked streets in downtown Ottawa for weeks.
Zwibel said there is “some value to leaving well enough alone and moving on,” but the anniversary is “important to acknowledge.”“It was a significant event in Canada,” she said. The Public Order Emergency Commission, which held weeks of hearings on the government’s use of the legislation in the fall, will issue its final report on Feb. 20.
