This article explores Sicogon Island, a hidden gem in the Visayas Sea, showcasing its history as a glamorous retreat, its natural beauty, and its potential as a thriving tourism destination.
Sicogon Island , tucked away in the Visayas Sea, might not be on the radar of most travelers seeking a nature escape. However, its small airport and short runway hint at a history steeped in tourism, even predating Boracay's rise to fame in the early 1990s. During a morning hike on the island, led by the manager of Huni Sicogon, one of the three resorts on the island, we stumbled upon ruins that served as a reminder of the island's glamorous past.
It was once a haven for affluent holidaymakers, a place where the elite of Philippine society mingled with fellow socialites. Reaching the island from Manila involved a flight to Roxas City in Capiz followed by a two-hour van ride to the town of Estancia. Though part of Iloilo Province, Estancia is closer to Roxas City Airport, making the journey more efficient. At Estancia Port, we were greeted by a bustling dried seafood market, a testament to the town's status as a major hub of commercial fishing in the Philippines. This tradition dates back to the early 1900s when Estancia was compared to Alaska due to its thriving fishing trade and abundant marine life. A short speedboat ride from Estancia Port brought us to the serene landscape of Sicogon Island. The resort, nestled amidst lush forests, offered breathtaking views of Mount Opao, the island's highest peak. The resort's expansive grounds, complete with manicured lawns, gardens, a swimming pool, and an outdoor bar, provided a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Throughout the island, we discovered hidden pockets of serenity, perfect for contemplation, meditation, or simply immersing oneself in nature's embrace. Sicogon's main appeal lies in its ability to offer a peaceful sanctuary, a place to reconnect with nature and find inner tranquility. The island's attractions cater to those seeking wellness and wilderness experiences. Our hike along a nature trail led us to a viewing platform overlooking a glassy pond, where ducks glided gracefully and a multitude of bird species soared against the majestic backdrop of Mount Opao. Sicogon Island, with its rich history and breathtaking beauty, holds the potential to become a leading destination for travelers seeking a unique and restorative experience
