Older workers should be appraised on outcomes, not years lived.

The statutory retirement age will rise from 63 to 64, and the re-employment age from 68 to 69, from July 1, 2026.

Professor Straughan, who is also director of the university’s Centre for Research on Successful Ageing, said: “Lifting a retirement age has benefits in that it helps us to avoid ageism, because there is no expiry date on the product – to put it crudely.”“You’d be surprised how many people cannot answer the question, ‘When is retirement for you?’” she said. “Many of us have lost track of that.”He said: “The assumption that age dictates ability is not just outdated, it’s unfair.

“It establishes a tacit understanding that seeking and remaining engaged in meaningful work until later in life is the updated societal norm, regardless of the specific employment modality or format.” As a result, a group of workers who want to work are not doing so, even as talent here falls short. For these workers, said Prof Straughan, it may not even be about money.

“Yet six out of 10 of all workers were of the view that older workers are given fewer training opportunities as compared to younger ones. Re-employed workers might get even training opportunities,” he said. Having gone through repeated transformations of work, the baby boomers are highly adaptable, he added. “Employers must prioritise AI workforce training for this experienced demographic.”Short of a manpower crunch, nothing can stop firms from offering workers who are approaching retirement or re-employment age unviable terms to make them leave.
