The AFL has last night informed umpires of their decision to shorten the “ reasonable time ” element when adjudicating holding the ball decisions , effective immediately.Sam Edmund, clubs were told of the rare mid-season rule change on Tuesday evening via email, informing them of the changes.
“The purpose of this note is to share with you the coaching that our umpires received today on holding the ball clarification and one aspect of holding the ball, which is reasonable time,” the AFL said in their memo. “We are grateful to the players adapting to these rules and also to the coaches for coaching the players to tackle in this manner as it is important that we continue to protect the health and safety of the players.”
“Well done umpiring dept being proactive on quickening holding ball decisions. Rather that then continual stoppages. Still need to protect ball winner and everyone needs to adjust thinking for this,” Shaw wrote.earlier this week, Essendon coach and former AFL employee Brad Scott cited an incident involving Charlie Curnow as the ball carrier to show his empathy for players in the current era.
Rival coach Damien Hardwick also pointed out the lack of holding the ball decisions given in the post-match interview from the same game, after umpires seemingly put the whistle away during Carlton’s 29-point win over Gold Coast.
