It went undetected in the moments after Queensland’s stirring game one win, but Blues players are using it as motivation as they try to save the State of Origin series.

NSW players are using some post-game antics by Reece Walsh, where the Queensland fullback gestured for Blues players to keep quiet before later savaging them as “thinking they own rugby league”, as motivation to spur an unlikely State of Origin revival.

While the Blues haven’t publicly commented on Walsh, several officials have privately said that his antics haven’t been lost on them in the build-up to the return match in Brisbane on Wednesday night. Walsh was involved in a controversial incident in the opening minutes when he leapt high to catch a bomb and led with his boot, which caught NSW forward Tyson Frizell on the face. The NRL’s match review committee didn’t issue a charge or concerning act notice against Walsh, who was hit hard by Josh Addo-Carr while on the ground after catching Frizell.

But Walsh had an advocate in his Broncos skipper Adam Reynolds, who defended the star’s post-game actions.“That was him getting caught up in the moment,” Reynolds said. “It happens to the best of us. There was a lot of pressure in the game, but when you deliver, you can do what you want. You also have to know it can come back to bite you at some stage.
