The new welcome to Sydney Mines sign is being well received by residents and visitors to the town. CONTRIBUTEDWhen the welcome mural on the wall at the end of Rahey’s Furniture Store in Sydney Mines was commissioned by the artist association and the Catholic Church in 1999, nobody really knew how long it would be there.

“I decided to approach them about an idea I had to change the welcome sign and they agreed it was time,” Julian explained.Julian said the idea for the new sign came as a result of his association with one of the town’s most popular priests. “In 2016 I had a number of conversations with Father Greg MacLeod about several ideas he had to promote the town.

“We did some research and came up with a photo of a train that was taken in Sydney Mines in 1961. We sent it to the printers and had it made into a mural. It might not be on wheels but it is large enough for residents and visitors to the town to see,” Julian said. In the years since its inception, New Deal Development Ltd. has worked with local groups and organizations as well as government officials to enhance services in the town of Sydney Mines.
