Shell to build mega battery in central New South Wales amid mounting concern about firmed storage.
Energy major Shell will install a giant battery in western Sydney, its second major deal this week as it looks to position itself to gain a foothold into storage – a key component of Australia’s energy transition plan.Shell said it will partner with AMPYR Australia to install the 500 megawatt, 1000 megawatt hour battery in Wellington, near the Central West Orana renewable energy zone. It is one of five regions the NSW government has placed at the heart of its plan to transition away from coal.
The installation of the battery is a boost to the state and federal government amid increasing concern about firmed capacity. The Albanese government has made accelerating renewable energy generation a central focus of its policy agenda. It has set an aggressive target of having zero-emission sources make up, which would allow the country to meet its net-zero-by-2050 target.
So-called firming capacity, which can be activated to top-up supply when the sun isn’t shining or wind isn’t blowing, but developers are now responding to pleas to boost storage.at its Mt Piper coal-powered station, as it accelerates plans to develop more storage capacity amid the country’s rapid transition away from fossil fuels.
