A grandmother has hit out at the Queensland government for failing to address the youth crime crisis, with a couple who were targeted twice in a week saying they were sleeping with one eye open.

The Sunshine State is witnessing a surge in crime, such as assaults, break and enters and car thefts, from young and adult offenders following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Youth crime campaigner Julie West told Sky News Australia young criminals were being given bail due to limited space in juvenile centres. "Yet, these kids are back out, released. We had breach of bail all of that put into place, so these kids are locked and they’re out there, they’re doing it, stabbing people.Ms West also lashed Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk for failing to address youth crime and stressed she had to speak with victims of crime. "Then what happens? People get stabbed, people die. It’s not good enough. Don’t put laws in place if you cant follow through, this government is all talk."
