The inquest heard Miss Yunupiŋu – as she is known for cultural reasons –at times felt 'hopeless and helpless' as she was pressured to return to her partner, despite his constant violent abuse.

But the coroner heard each time Marika's release from prison neared, those around her could "see the distress rising", as his inevitable return to Yolŋu country came closer and pressure, particularly from Miss Yunupiŋu's mother-in-law, increased."It was difficult for people to get involved in the situation because of the nature of the families involved."

The inquest was told the pressure on Miss Yunupiŋu to stay with Marika was so heavy that on one occasion, when she escaped to Darwin, her mother-in-law flew to the city to escort her back home to East Arnhem Land. The FSF, the inquest heard, is a multi-agency program, chaired by NT Police, designed to protect families at risk of serious harm or death from domestic violence. But Miss Yunupiŋu had disengaged from the system in April 2018, and despite being re-referred, she was rejected when she moved to Darwin, just weeks before Marika killed her.

"[Police are] very good at putting offenders away, we're good at putting them before the court and getting them locked up," he said."We became so stuck in the operation of doing the things we know how to do, that we forgot to take into consideration the things that we didn't know as well."
