Tennis: Serena Williams has bid an emotional goodbye to the US Open with a third round loss to Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic.

Serena's US Open run ends | 03:17As Australia bids to book a place in the Billie Jean King Cup finals in a qualifier against Mexico beginning in Brisbane on Friday, new captain Sam Stosur has been keeping a close eye on a star on the comeback trail and also the nation’s most promising junior.

Aside from being Billie Jean King Cup teammates, the pair share the distinction of having defeated Serena Williams on Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Stosur’s success earned her the 2011 US Open title, while Tomljanovic ended the legend’s career on the same court in 2022. But she has been back in the gym and also on the practice court in the United States and Stosur said she will “be back in the next few weeks, hopefully”.

“If she could just get back to playing and competing, hopefully we can see her get back to those results she had a couple of years ago, because she really was in the best form of her career. So it will be good to see her playing again and hopefully she will be back in the team soon as well.” Australia's Emerson Jones has shown good promise at senior level since reaching the final of the Australian Open girls singles in January, where she was beaten by Renata Jamrichova. / -- IMAGE RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE - STRICTLY NO COMMERCIAL USE --Stosur, who has replaced Alicia Molik as the national captain, spoke with Jones at the Pat Rafter Tennis Centre in Brisbane this week and is impressed with the 15-year-old’s progress since her encouraging effort at Melbourne Park.
