The Island Corridor Foundation, which owns the rail corridor, hopes the new — and likely taller — bridge will one day be used again for rail traffic.

A damaged rail bridge on East Shawnigan Lake Road will be replaced by a new and likely higher bridge, says its owner — even though no rail cars have used the bridge for several years.

The now-dismantled bridge had been marked with brightly coloured stripes and a sign indicating it was 3.4 metres high, with nearby flashing lights to alert drivers of the height restriction, Larry Stevenson, executive director of the foundation, said Tuesday. The structure — made up of large steel girders positioned on a deck spanning the road, with rails on top of the deck — had been upgraded in 2005 and was in good condition, he said, adding steel in the bridge has been taken to a holding yard and will probably be sold for scrap.

In August, Premier John Horgan said he was not confident that a rail system would be revived, describing the cost — estimated to be as much as $1 billion — as “profound.” Proponents say an Island rail system would be more environmentally friendly than keeping gas-fuelled vehicles on the roads, arguing it would help forge economic ties among Island communities.
