A study on the predators in the water hazard at the Carbrook club near Brisbane is being hailed as a cautionary tale as climate change brings more deluges.
It all started in 1996 when raging floods swept six young bull sharks from a nearby river into a 21-hectare lake near the golf course’s 14th hole. When the floodwaters receded, the sharks found themselves stuck, surrounded by grassy hills and curious golfers.
Bull sharks can be found in warm coastal waters the world over. These stout sharks can reach four metres in length and weigh upward of 225 kilograms. They are one of the few shark species that can tolerate a wide range of salinities, a trait that allows them to venture into freshwater and brackish habitats such as rivers, estuaries and lagoons.
Research suggests bull sharks can live about 30 years, and the Carbrook group survived in the golf course’s lake for 17 years. That suggested there was “no upper limit” to how long these sharks could spend in low-salinity environments, said Vincent Raoult, a postdoctoral researcher at Deakin University in Australia, who was not involved in the new study.
