Thousands of homes across Sydney are tonight without power following a severe thunderstorm.

An extreme weather warning is in place for parts of Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Newcastle and Gosford.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should move cars under cover or away from trees as well as secure loose items in yards and on balconies.
