Seven local school music classes have been chosen as finalists in the CBC's 2022 Canadian Music Class Challenge. Winners will be announced Wednesday.

Four Burnaby schools are in the running for top prizes in the CBC’s Canadian Music Class Challenge this year.

Every year, school music groups across the country are challenged to pick a Canadian song from a list created by the CBC and make it their own.In the primary instrumental category, Capitol Hill Elementary and Glenwood Elementary were both picked for renditions of Paper Heart by Jeremy and Jazzy. Four Burnaby school groups were picked in the elementary instrumental category: Capitol Hill Elementary Div. 7 for Tegan and Sara’s Back in Your Head, Capitol Hill’s chime and handbell ensemble, Resonance, for Nikamo by Burnstick, Second Street Community School Div. 6 for Paper Heart, and Second Street Div. 4 for Mo Kenney’s Sucker.

Marlborough Elementary, meanwhile, earned a finalist spot in the Indigenous languages category with its version of the Cree lullaby Nikamo. Prizes range between $1,000 and $3,000 for new musical instruments and a plaque, and the winners will be announced Wednesday.Follow Cornelia Naylor on Twitter @CorNaylor
