Relations have soured again between North and South Korea as Pyongyang routinely trades threats with Seoul and its United States allies.

Seoul will pursue a bid for the 2036 Summer Games without reviving efforts to co-host an Olympics with the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon told Reuters.

“I think the strategy for 2032 was doomed to failure because of unpredictable inter-Korean relations,” Oh said in an interview. Pyongyang routinely trades threats with Seoul and its allies in Washington, where officials say North Korea may be preparing to resume nuclear weapons testing for the first time since 2017.

An official with the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee said it had not received formal statements of intent from either Seoul or the southern city of Busan on a 2036 bid.
