A Senate working group is striving to make the Upper Chamber carbon neutral by 2030, and it’s reached a key milestone in that effort: figuring out the Senate’s annual carbon footprint. The answer, as detailed in a recently tabled report, is an estimated 3,577 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022-23, roughly the same level of emissions generated from driving 796 gas-powered cars for a year, or the average annual energy use of 451 homes.
Purchased steam alone accounted for 831.6 tonnes of CO2e under Scope 2, while electricity contributed 138.1 tonnes and purchased chilled water accounted for roughly 12.8 tonnes. The impact of the use of the Cliff plant is already being mitigated through PSPC’s Energy Services and Acquisition Program, which aims to make the energy system that powers 80 federal buildings, including Parliament Hill, carbon neutral by 2030. As part of that, the Cliff plant is currently being rebuilt.
