Senator Bong Go provided food packs to residents in Calumpit, Bulacan affected by prolonged monsoon flooding and emphasized the need for permanent evacuation centers under the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act.

SEN. Bong Go waded through floodwaters in Calumpit, Bulacan, on Monday, Aug. 31, to check on residents who have been dealing with prolonged flooding caused by the southwest monsoon or “habagat.

” Go visited the municipality after learning that some communities had been submerged for nearly a month, disrupting livelihoods and daily activities. Before proceeding to the evacuation center at F. Mendoza Memorial Elementary School, Go personally walked through the floodwaters to reach affected residents, listen to their concerns, and assess their condition.

“Be careful. I love you very much here in Calumpit, Bulacan, my countrymen. Just call me Kuya Bong Go,” he told residents. Go, who had earlier assisted habagat-affected families in Quezon City, said he considers public service a daily responsibility, even on holidays.

“Today is a holiday, but for me, there is no holiday. We work every day, especially for our countrymen who need help. To the best of my ability, I will serve all of you,” he said. Together with his Malasakit Team, Go distributed food packs to 400 flood-affected residents.

Advertisement Go stressed the need for long-term disaster preparedness, citing Republic Act 12076, or the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act, which he principally authored and co-sponsored. The law requires the establishment of permanent, disaster-resilient evacuation centers in cities and municipalities nationwide. The facilities are intended to provide displaced families with safe and properly equipped shelters during calamities, reducing dependence on schools, gyms and other venues not designed for evacuation.

Go also highlighted the need to maintain access to health care during prolonged disasters, which can increase the risk of illness among affected communities. Advertisement As vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, he cited RA 11463, or the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which institutionalized one-stop centers providing indigent and financially incapacitated patients access to medical and financial assistance. There are now 167 Malasakit Centers nationwide, including four in Bulacan.

Before visiting the affected residents, Go stopped at a local siomai vendor who continued selling amid the rain. He bought the vendor’s remaining stocks so the seller could go home safely.

“Let’s support our own,” Go said, urging Filipinos to patronize local vendors and small businesses. Advertisement “As your Mr. Malasakit, I will continue to watch over and help as much as I can. Whatever challenges our countrymen face, we will not abandon them,” he said.
