The Secret Service had been warned up to five times about a suspicious person leading up to the moment Donald Trump was shot while he spoke at a Republican rally.

Democratic and Republican politicians have blasted the Secret Service Director in a heated committee hearing over the attempted assassination of Donald Trump as she refused to resign.

The federal law enforcement agency has been under scrutiny over its actions in the days following the attempted assassination, with calls for its boss to step down. "We are going to look into how this happened, and we are going to take corrective action to ensure that it never happens again," she said.

Pressed on why the rally was not immediately stopped, the director of the agency said she is unclear of the timeline of when Secret Service agents were told. GOP representative Nancy Mace said the committee on July 15 provided a list of"demands of information" it wanted and asked if she had responded to the request.Ms Mace then asked if"all audio and video recordings" had been provided to the committee, to which the Secret Service replied with the same reply from seconds earlier.GOP representative Nancy Mace grilled Ms Cheatle.
