Fan Wei was one of 11 people sentenced Tuesday at the Jiangmen Intermediate People’s Court, in a further escalation of the diplomatic crisis between the two countries

In the second such sentencing this year, a Canadian citizen has been given the death penalty in China for drugs offences.

One American and four Mexicans were each given suspended death sentences or life, CNN reports. Reuters reports that Wei was an alleged leader in the 2012 production scheme, citing a statement by the court. A suspect known as Wu Ziping was also given the death penalty. The South China Morning Post reported that the case involved a drug factory in Taishan, China, at which the suspects had allegedly produced 63 kilograms of methamphetamine, as well as 365.9 grams of dimethylamphetamine.

She faces extradition to the U.S. on the back of charges that she violated sanctions in place by the U.S. against Iran.
