The sanctuary was following a theme of naming new arrivals after actors and actresses, so it was too good a chance to miss when a full-blown legend turned up
Dame Judi Dench visited a seal sanctuary - and had a newly rescued pup named after her. The legendary actress was visiting the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, near Helston, Cornwall, when the animal was brought in.
The injured three-week-old pup was found on a beach, dehydrated and with several wounds. Staff at the sanctuary had been naming pups after famous actors and actresses this season - and couldn't resist naming the pup after the Dame during her visit. Photos of Dame Judi, 88, visiting the site show her standing next to a board where her namesake seal is listed, along with its weight of 21.5kg.
Sanctuary’s fundraising manager, Leanne Attwood, said: “It was like fate – it just so happened that, as Dame Judi and her family explored the sanctuary, this pup was admitted to our Seal Hospital. With our actors and actresses naming theme this season, we knew we just had to name her after Judi Dench, who was already on our list of name ideas.
“Judi was absolutely an absolute delight and so gracious about the naming. She was so excited to be able to meet pup Judi and explore behind the scenes of our Seal Hospital. Our animal care team is now working hard to nurse the pup back to full health, with hopes of successfully releasing her back to the wild as soon as possible.”
Animal lover Dame Judi has a historic soft spot for animal sanctuaries and wildlife centres. She is vice-president of wildlife conservation NGO Fauna and Flora International and has participated multiple times in Explorers against Extinction's Sketch For Survival fundraiser - where prominent celebs sketch wildlife and auction their work.
