Murder charges have been filed against the alleged suspect in the killing of SEA Games gold medalist Mervin Guarte, Calapan City chief of police Lieutenant Colonel Roden Fulache said.In a telephone interview, Fulache said murder charges have been filed against Dionisio Calooy, a tricycle driver, before the Calapan City Prosecutor’s Office. He said Calooy was identified through closed circuit television (CCTV) footage in the area of the incident.Guarte was stabbed near his heart while asleep..
May duda kasi ‘yung suspek na nagkaroon ng relasyon ‘yung kanyang ka live-in at saka itong ating victim,” said Fulache..(The suspect has long held a personal grudge against the victim, so he was monitoring the victim's return home. We also found out that ever since their childhood, a rivalry seemed to have been brewing between them because of games. Back then, they would compete in boxing matches, but the suspect would always lose while the victim would always win. Even in basketball games, the rivalry had been present since their early years.)The suspect remains at large.Guarte won two gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games in 2023 and 2019 for obstacle racing, and two silver medals in the 2011 SEA Games for athletics.
