Watching the once vaunted, mighty Russian war machine come apart in Ukraine should be something which our Canadian military studies with detailed interest, writes military columnist Scott Taylor.

Fearing a lightning Russian victory, Canada and other NATO trainers left Ukraine. However, once it was apparent that all that training and sophisticated weaponry had paid off, everyone realized Putin would not be staging a victory parade in Kyiv any time soon. With the war first turning into a bloody stalemate and subsequent reversal of momentum in favour of Ukraine, Canada has resumed training Ukraine fighters albeit from the safe haven of the UK.

Those familiar with the M777 in Canadian use, will recall that it was highly praised for its accuracy and long range. However, Afghanistan was a counter-insurgency campaign against an ill-equipped Taliban with nothing heavier than mortars and rocket launchers. In other words, the M777 was a great piece of kit when the other guy had no guns of equal calibre.

These have proven extremely lethal at long range against even the most modern Russian models. Likely the efficient Carl Gustav have had some success against less armoured vehicles such as personnel carriers and trucks. However, if Canada wants to maintain a high proficiency in anti-tank capability, we will need to look at acquiring more advanced weaponry.
