If the Jays expected to loosen up for a couple innings before getting down to business, the Mariners had other ideas.
Before the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider had said he felt Manoah was “really ready for this moment.” A day earlier, Manoah had said he had been waiting his whole life for it. He said he knew it was something new for him, but that he had been successful with a lot of firsts in his big-league career. It is a thin line between confidence and cockiness, but Manoah had every reason to believe in himself. He had given up just four earned runs in all of September.
That was a reasonable plan, but if the Jays expected to loosen up for a couple innings before getting down to business, the Mariners had other ideas. Manoah dinged leadoff hitter Julio Rodriguez on the hand in an 0-2 count, then gave up a one-out RBI double to Eugenio Suarez. Cal Raleigh followed that with a 3-2 shot over the right-field fence, and Manoah’s long streak of sparkling success was officially dusted.
That last part was less surprising, if only because Seattle’s Luis Castillo is one of those pitchers who can seem unhittable when he’s dealing.
