The latest narrative began on Friday, when Irving posted a link to a film, Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America, on his Twitter account, which has 4.5 million followers. There was no commentary about it, just the link. Reporters who have watched the film — it is available in the United States on Amazon’s video service, but is not on the Canadian site — describe a hodge-podge of antisemitic content, from Holocaust denial to blaming Jews for slavery to linking Jews to Satanism.

By Sunday, Irving was being condemned in many quarters and celebrated in others. Kanye West took a pause from blowtorching his career to offer words of support on social media. There were calls on ESPN, one of the NBA’s main media partners, for the Nets to cut ties with Irving. The basketball team had, after all, refused to sign Irving to a long-term extension in the summer, at least in part because it was worried he would make a mess of things, so it was in a reasonable position to walk away.

But can he be just that again? Irving’s actions may have been just subtle enough to dodge sanction. He didn’t explicitly endorse the film, but his continued refusal to disavow it makes clear that this was an endorsement all along. He has avoided repeating its many antisemitic tropes, but has now gone days without saying that he disagrees with the assertions of the film he shared.
