No demons on the pitch as Canada sails to an easy 4\u002D1 victory over Honduras, a team that has humbled them in the past
The game wasn’t even 13 minutes old, and this was basically the job done. Canada needed just a draw in the match to secure a spot in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals in June, and a two-goal lead provided plenty of cushion. In the end, it was a comfortable 4-1 win for the home side in a contest that was even more lopsided than the score would suggest.
It was a statement on the pitch, too. Herdman sent out a lineup that included a front seven that could feature for Canada for some time. Larin and Jonathan David up top, and a central midfield of Stephen Eustaquio, Ismael Kone and Osorio. Davies and Tajon Buchanan went out as wide midfielders, but in practice they marauded up and down the wings, their teammates finding them in great, green hectares of space to key attacks.
But the lessons of Qatar will still be there. The Canadians won’t get that kind of offensive freedom against better teams, so they must learn to generate goals even when they aren’t romping all over the pitch. With Canada’s place at the next World Cup already secured, since they are one of the hosts, that’s essentially the gig for the next three years: figure out how to get results against better teams. Oh, and maybe win a trophy.
