But critics have warned breakthroughs in human-animal hybrids - known as chimeras - present “disturbing” ethical dilemmas. The scientists came from the California-based Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the Murcia Catholic University in Spain.
They injected human stem cells into a monkey embryo that had been genetically modified to deactivate the genes that control organ growth. The team say the cells survived and formed a hybrid embryo - which if implanted in a female monkey could have been born.Scientist Juan Carlos Izpisua led the team of US-Spanish scientists - who carried out their experiment in China due to legal issuesBut the experiment was ended before the embryo could grow further.
But they still had to carry out their experiment in China due to "legal issues" surrounding the use of embryos. The name originally described monstrous creatures that were part dragon, part goat and part lion. The team have not officially published details of their discovery - but have reported their claims to Spanish newspaperShe added: "We are doing the experiments with monkeys in China because, in principle, they cannot be done [in Spain].
He said: "What happens if the stem cells escape and form human neurons in the brain of the animal? Would it have consciousness?Scientists claim to have successfully combined human stem cells with a monkey embryo - and found they began creating muscle and organ cells
