Dutch elm continues to plague the city’s dwindling elm population with 20 coming down this fall; Moncton also working to keep its alive
Richard Hall is hoping 60 disease-free trees from Fredericton’s nursery will keep alive the motto “The City of Stately Elms.”
“There’s still some hope,” said Hall, the city’s forester. “We’re not ready to give up on the elm. It’s beautiful and probably one of the most perfect street trees you could have.” But since 1961, when the disease was first spotted in Fredericton, well over 10,000 elms have been lost. About 1,000 remain on the city’s right-of-ways, says Hall.
The ones that grow wild along the river and streams in the surrounding area don’t seem to last long. The disease is caused by a fungus that’s spread by a bark beetle that lives inside the tree. After the brood overwinters, the young ones hatch and try to find new elm trees to feed on in May. Diseased trees show signs of premature yellow leafing and thinning on top of the canopy, almost like a bald spot. Within a year or two, the tree loses all its leaves and is dead.
