Mary Maurice teaches Korah Collegiate pupils about role monarchy has played in Canadian history; she says Charles III should be given a chance to make his mark

Saturday will mark the coronation of King Charles III as the Head of State of the United Kingdom, Canada and several other Commonwealth countries. The coronation is being met with indifference by many and an increase in republican sentiment by some, thinking the death of internationally respected, long-reigning Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 8, 2022 marks the time for the monarchy itself to pass away. That clearly isn’t the case with all Canadians.

Maurice owns a vast collection of royal souvenirs, including a film reel of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953 that she has transferred to DVD, a biscuit tin marking the coronation of King Edward VII in 1901 and a Queen Victoria plate from 1897. She encouraged her students to view Saturday’s coronation — or to at least take note of highlights of the event online — in preparation for a quiz she intends to give to her students on Monday. She includes monarchy lessons in her classes on a regular basis, a portrait of Queen Elizabeth placed in her classroom.

“I don’t know much about the monarchy but I’m excited to live in this new age. It’s a very historic moment and I think it’s really cool that we get to experience this shift in the monarchy and I’m really excited to see what comes of it,” said student Hazel Berlinguette. So far, King Charles has not commanded the same respect his mother did. But many, like Maurice, are taking a "be patient and give him a chance" view of his transition to the throne.

There was also some sense of apprehension when George VI died in 1952, succeeded by his young daughter Elizabeth.“Charles is going to find a way of pulling us together. It’s a global world whether we want to accept it or not,” Maurice said, pointing to his involvement in environmental causes.
