Because Ontario nurses are not legally allowed to go on strike, the Ontario Nurses' Association is using ‘information pickets' to argue its case

Ontario's unionized nurses and allied health workers staged picket lines in Sault Ste. Marie and across Ontario Thursday as part of a province-wide effort to hound the Conservative government over the need to improve wages, improve staffing and improve patient care.

The Ontario Nurses' Association is currently bargaining for a new contract with the Ontario Hospital Association. Because Ontario nurses are not legally allowed to go on strike, the Ontario Nurses' Association is using "information pickets" to argue its case for a new contract that takes for the period of April 2021 through to March of 2023. The nurses waved flags and placards and encouraging motorists to honk their support..

A ecent survey of ONA members showed that nurses are concerned about salary and wage stability and that the overall real wage power has been continuously eroded over the past decade. The ONA said nurses were unfairly subjected to the conditions of Ontario Bill 124 which put a one per-cent per year wage cap for nurses for three years. The bill was defeated in a court challenge on November 29, but the Ontario government is appealing the court decision.
