KOTA KINABALU: A search and rescue (SAR) operation was mounted on Wednesday (July 26) by the authorities after a man was reported missing when he failed to return from a fishing trip at Tanjung Labian waters in Lahad Datu.

The 32-year-old man initially went out to sea in a boat to fish at Tanjung Labian around 5am on Tuesday .

"The family of the victim called 999 at 9.29pm the same day when he still did not return home, and proceeded to file a police report on Wednesday at 7.54am. "The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency sought the assistance from the Fire and Rescue Department for SAR efforts and a team was sent to the location 120km away.

"The integrated operation that commenced at 2pm which involved the police and its marine unit, Civil Defence Force and civilians, used surface searching methods along Tanjung Labian coastal areas," said a Department spokesman. The search was postponed at 5.30pm due to unfavourable weather and rough sea condition, and will be continued the next morning.
