Santa Ana winds are common in Southern California during cooler months. These dry, warm and gusty northeast winds blow from the interior toward the coast and offshore, moving in the opposite direction of the normal onshore flow that carries moist air from the Pacific. Santa Anas are created by high pressure over the Great Basin, the vast desert interior of the West. As the air sinks, it loses its moisture and flows clockwise toward Southern California.
Passing through towering mountain ranges, the air speeds up as it squeezes through passes and canyons, becoming drier and warmer. Humidity levels often plummet to single-digit percentages. This extreme dryness causes vegetation to dry out and become susceptible to fire. The strong wind speeds can turn any spark into a rapidly spreading wildfire. Santa Anas are linked to some of the worst wildfires Southern California has experienced. One theory suggests the name comes from Santa Ana Canyon in Orange County, though other theories and nicknames like 'devil winds' persist. Santa Ana winds can clear urban pollution, creating sparkling vistas, but they also dry out lips, noses, throats and skin
