If we heard him say it once during spring training, we heard Charlie Montoyo say these three words 100 times. Both have been stellar through the first three games of the 2019 season, the latest a solid starting outing from Aaron Sanchez in a 3-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon at the Rogers Centre.

“I was just trying to match what the other two guys did before me,” Sanchez said, referring to shutout efforts by Marcus Stroman in a loss Thursday and by Matt Shoemaker in a win on Friday. “I was trying to do what I did in spring training and I brought it here.” Indeed, he probably is. After Sanchez exited, the bullpen held things together with solid work from Tim Mayza, Daniel Hudson, Joe Biagini and Ken Giles, with his first save of the season.

“If I’m upset about anything, it’s not getting deep in the game and having to use four guys after me,” said Sanchez, who allowed three hits and three walks with six strikeouts. “I take pride in doing that the day I pitch.”As the baseball world awaits the arrival of Vlad Guerrero Jr., following his recovery from an oblique strain, it’s difficult to imagine the Jays getting more reliable third-base play than they are right now.

In an effort to shore up things defensively, Montoyo has moved Drury in from the third-base line and so far it’s paying off.
