San Miguel Corp. (SMC) removes 700,000 tons of silt and waste from Pampanga River as part of its Better Rivers PH initiative to alleviate flooding in Luzon.
San Miguel Corp. ( SMC ), a conglomerate specializing in food, power, and infrastructure, has successfully removed approximately 700,000 tons of silt and waste from the Pampanga River. This cleanup initiative, part of SMC 's Better Rivers PH program, aims to alleviate flooding in Luzon . The company reported removing 694,372 cubic meters of silt and solid waste from a 26.3-kilometer stretch of the 260-kilometer Pampanga River.
This waterway, the second largest in Luzon, traverses Pampanga, Bulacan, and Nueva Ecija, serving as a major transport route in Central Luzon. Launched in 2020, Better Rivers PH has now covered a total of 156.42 kilometers of waterways, removing a staggering 8,348,440 metric tons of silt and solid waste as of January 2nd. SMC Chairman and CEO Ramon Ang emphasized that this project was executed at no cost to the government or taxpayers. He stated that it effectively deepened the river's channels and improved water flow into Manila Bay. Ang highlighted the company's commitment to cleaning up river systems and assisting the government and communities in flood mitigation. He explained that the Pampanga River's shallowness due to siltation and pollution caused water to easily overflow during heavy rains. This affected farmlands, communities, and even contributed to flooding in other areas. Therefore, the cleanup was crucial to alleviate these issues. Pampanga Governor Dennis Pineda acknowledged SMC's efforts, stating that the cleanup and deepening of the downstream Pampanga River, particularly around Macabebe and Masantol, will significantly reduce floodwaters faster.Meanwhile, Macabebe Vice Mayor Vince Flores underscored that the dredging project not only cleans the river but also boosts the local economy. He noted that the extracted silt was repurposed to reinforce dikes, coastal roads, and elevate infrastructure, including schools. Flores described the project as a lifeline for Macabebe, which serves as a natural catch basin for floodwaters from Nueva Ecija and San Fernando. He added that before the cleanup, it took days, even weeks, for water to recede, but now, with deeper channels, the flood subsides faster. This Pampanga River cleanup adds to SMC's list of completed river initiatives. Last year, they successfully cleaned the Bulacan River systems, removing over 4.31 million metric tons of silt and waste from 74.5 kilometers of rivers, including major waterways like the Taliptip-Maycapiz-Bambang, Meycauayan, Marilao, Mailad-Sta. Maria, Guiguinto, Balagtas, Pamarawan, Kalero, and Labangan-Angat Rivers
