A struggle for identity and culture took the hip-hop artist and songwriter back home to Zambia where she reclaimed her story, she's back showcasing her African roots at a new Sydney festival.

"When my project was released, [I thought] 'OK, I get to showcase where I'm from and my people will be proud'. The Zambian-born and Botswana-raised artist found herself feeling uncomfortable when labelled as 'Australia's own' and 'Zambian-Australian'. "And still share the beautiful story of how I started my career in Australia. Both of them can still exist."Despite the internal struggle, Sampa is grateful for how Australian audiences supported her music throughout her career.
The significance of performing in a venue like the Art Gallery of NSW — a vastly different cultural space — isn't lost on her.
