Five-time Grammy-winning British singer-songwriter Sam Smith is in the middle of a sold-out 20-show residency at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre that runs through mid-March. Between performances, Smith has been documenting their Bay Area culinary adventures on @samserved, an exuberant food-focused Instagram account that started as a modest companion to their main page with more than 14 million followers.
With each passing stop, from wings and wine at Pier 23 in San Francisco to a multi-course Valentine’s Day meal at the famed French Laundry in Yountville, the account has quickly grown from double digits to more than 40,000, drawing local diners curious to see where Smith will turn up next. Four of Smith’s 10 restaurant visits to date have been in Marin, starting with poke, ceviche, oysters, fish and chips, and a burrito in the beer garden at Hook Fish Co. in Mill Valley. Smith wrote in the caption after the meal, “I started with a fresh beer and poke, which was so fresh that I thought I was a mermaid. … Beautiful birds tweeted and flew around us whilst we ate, and honestly it was just stunning.” Smith hit Mill Valley’s Shoreline Coffee Shop for a smoked salmon scramble, cochinita pork egg-a-muffin and cup of Stumptown coffee and Sam’s Anchor Cafe in Tiburon for New England clam chowder, fried calamari and a Dirty Bird grilled chicken sandwich with malted tang chips. My favorite post has Smith cheerfully consuming a fresh sparkling limeade and bistec sandwich while sitting on a grassy patch in the parking lot of Sol Food in Mill Valley. Smith drizzles it with the restaurant’s popular jarred Pique, with “a little chile at the top in a jacuzzi of sauce,” and exclaims it’s “the best steak sandwich I’ve ever had, for sure!” before pirouetting in front of the store and jogging to their vehicle. With the residency continuing through Saturday, the obvious question is which restaurant is next on the global superstar’s list? I messaged them a few Marin suggestions. What would you add to the list? Leanne Battelle is a freelance food writer and restaurant columnist.
