Aliyana Porro , Willow Deveaux and Andrea Adams decorate the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Halifax float before the 2022 SaltWire Holiday Parade of Lights. She and her 18 year old-daughter, Hunter, were planted on the corner of Argyle and Duke Streets in folding chairs, blankets and a thermos of coffee an hour before the 27th annual SaltWire Holiday Parade of Lights began on Saturday evening.

As dozens of floats and the hundreds who built and planned to walk along with them spreading seasonal cheer were shepherded by volunteers down the side of Citadel Hill in preparation, Hiltz remembered her first time at the parade. And as a young mother, she was thinking of traditions to create for her family.

But she was also a parade going amateur – showing up at the last minute in a rush and pushing the stroller through the throng so Hunter would see a bright magical world pass by.Eighteen year old’s may have lots of other things to do on Saturday nights, but Rhonda didn’t have to twist Hunter’s arm to make the trek downtown with family friends.Up on Citadel Hill, those thoughts of youth, community and the spirit of the season were shared by Andrea Adams and Mike Vautour.

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Halifax staff members were under the strict direction of 11 year old club-member Willow Deveaux as they decorated the club van.Staff and youth spent the preceding weeks designing and building the Toyland themed costumes the 18 club members wore as the walked behind their van.By the time the parade kicked off at 6 p.m. thousands had arrived downtown to be bathed in colourful light and escape for a time to thoughts of a happy season.
