The consequences of long COVID are likely to be profound and potentially more costly than the acute infection itself.
Beyond this immediate crisis is the additional concern that long COVID symptoms — ranging from general fatigue to serious respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological symptoms — are experienced by as many as one-third of COVID-19 survivors. With more than 600 million cases worldwide to date, this is a substantial concern.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
Beyond the doom and gloom, there is good news. There are solutions but we need to get busy. We still have time to intervene by changing our behaviour to reduce the short- and long-term impact of this virus on us and our children. Universal masking with well-fitted N95 or equivalent masks is highly effective for preventing transmission, and there are no substantial evidence-based drawbacks to masking.
The second thing we need to do is face these future long-term health consequences and invest in research on long COVID now. Scientists are racing against the clock, but a substantial strategic investment is necessary to develop an understanding of processes triggered by COVID-19 and to find treatments to prevent or ameliorate cognitive impairments in time.Article content
