Full-time faculty at Saint Mary's University in Halifax have delivered a strong strike vote. - Bill SpurrMore than six months after contract negotiations between Saint Mary’s University and its full-time faculty began, talks have broken down and union members have voted 98 per cent in favour of a strike.
Conrad said there was a long list of issues when bargaining started in the summer, several of which have been resolved. She said her members, which include about 300 full-time faculty and librarians, are determined to get a “fair and equitable” agreement on benefits and wages. “Our ask is so minimal, we’re almost splitting hairs at this point, but it’s meaningful to our members. Health and wellness, we haven’t had an increase in a decade and we’re asking for an increase of 0.6 per cent ... and the employer is coming back with 0.1. If you can’t recognize the health and well-being of our faculty members ... we’re frustrated; 0.1 per cent, that’s it.
“Students have started getting behind us in so much solidarity. They’re smart, they get it, they see it, they know how hard we work for them, they respect us and we’re the ones providing them with their education,” she said.
