Union and city remain at odds over wage escalation
CUPE Local 486 workers strike in 2021. SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for September 12, 2023 | SaltWireAbout 140 Saint John inside workers began a strike action as of Tuesday morning, Sept. 12, impacting services throughout the city.
The workers — 911 dispatcher, customer service representatives, and recreation attendants, among others — are represented by Cupe Local 486. The union says workers voted 94 per cent in favour of labour action because the city’s offer on cost of living increase does not stay true to its own wage escalation policy first passed in 2019.
Mike Davidson, the servicing representative for CUPE's national office, says the employees last received a wage increase in 2021, but they have since been impacted by inflation. The city, meanwhile, says its offer is “fair and reasonable and fully compliant with Council’s Wage Escalation Policy.” In a statement issued Saturday, city officials noted the union received wage packages during a fiscal crisis brought on primarily by wage escalation and that workers received increases that exceeded management’s, the city’s tax base, and the province’s consumer price index.
