A southern white rhinoceros born a week ago in Victoria has died from internal injuries sustained after birth. 7NEWS
Following the birth, keepers noticed an absence in bonding between the pair and the calf was not thriving, so she was taken into the zoo’s vet clinic for medical checks and supplementary feeding. She was being provided around-the-clock feeds of colostrum and milk from her mother, and the pair were in the process of being re-introduced.
“The death of any animal is challenging for all involved, but we can find comfort in the knowledge that every action was taken to ensure the calf was receiving the best care possible,” Werribee Open Range Zoo director Mark Pilgrim said. “We know this news will bring sadness to our zoo community, and our kind thoughts are with them and all who cared for this precious calf, and particularly with our vet and keeping teams who worked tirelessly to care for the calf over the past five days.”It’s estimated there are only 10,080 of the threatened species remaining in the wild.
