This is not an organization that can be reformed

Instead of grovelling for forgiveness, announcing sweeping changes or bothering to feign contrition, Hockey Canada returned to parliament refuelled with a gargantuan dose of hubris, denial and disregard for the damage they’ve inflicted. The NP Comment newsletter from columnist Colby Cosh and NP Comment editors tackles the important topics with boldness, verve and wit. Skinner also resisted calls for change at Hockey Canada’s very top, saying senior leadership shouldn’t be replaced on account of “substantial misinformation and unduly cynical attacks.” Is Skinner suggesting young women are lying about being sexually assaulted by members of various National Junior Hockey Teams? That seems beyond the pale, so she must be suggesting they’re lying about Hockey Canada’s response to their allegations? That also seems wrong. Does she mean the media is blowing the alleged coverup of a videotaped gang rape out of proportion? Hmm. Perhaps she can clarify.

Skinner also seems to think focusing on change at Hockey Canada is unfair because non-hockey players rape women, too. In her words, “Suggesting that toxic behaviour is somehow a specific hockey problem or to scapegoat hockey as a centrepiece for toxic culture is in my opinion counterproductive to finding solutions and risks overlooking the change that needs to be made more broadly to prevent and address toxic behaviour, particularly against women.

Prior to this week, the debate largely centred on whether Hockey Canada could meaningfully change. Now it’s evident they don’t even want to.
