Rutgers defeated Virginia Tech in Blacksburg for the first time on Saturday.
had control of the game, holding a comfortable lead and keeping Virginia Tech at arms length. Its first win at Lane Stadium,The Scarlet Knights could have essentially sealed a victory midway through the third quarter. Holding a 22-7 lead, they faced a fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line. Head coach Greg Schiano had a decision to make: kick a field goal to go up three scores, or got for the touchdown to shut the door on the Hokies.
On the subsequent drive, Schiano found himself making another crucial decision. After the Scarlet Knights stalled at Virginia Tech’s 35-yard line, he sent out his field goal unit for the 53-yard attempt. It would have set a career-high for kicker Jai Patel, who missed a 36-yarder earlier in the game.
“Initially, we decided we were going to kick it. He made it in pregame from there, and Allen said, ‘look, he made it in pregame.’ Then we got the penalty, we drew them offsides, got back to the spot where we said we were going to originally kick it,” Schiano said. “Maybe I should have given it a little more thought and said, ‘hey look, you just got a gift to get you back there,’ but the reason we did to draw them offsides, to go on a different cadence, was to be able to kick it again.
“For these guys to do it the way they did it today is important to us,” Schiano said. “Certainly there’s a bunch of stuff — coaching and playing — that we’ll clean up, but to be able to do what we did moving forward is important.”
