Russia has warned Sweden and Finland their citizens would be “sent to die” if they joined NATO in a shocking statement that has sent alarm bells around the world.
The Nordic neighbours threw their historic policies of military neutrality onto the scrapheap to formally seek NATO membership last May, just months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
He claimed the length of the borders between Russia and NATO would “almost double” after the accession of Finland and Sweden and accused the nations of threatening security in Europe. “It is clear that Swedish politicians 'charmed' by Washington are deliberately throwing their people into the NATO abyss,” he continued.
