UK says most of Ukrainian saltmine town near Bakhmut is in Russian hands after intensive fighting
A feature of the battle near Bakhmut is that some of the fighting has been around entrances to disused salt mine tunnels that honeycomb the area, with the MoD update adding: “Both sides are likely concerned that [the tunnels] could be used for infiltration behind their lines.”
Highlighting the intensity of the Russian assault, Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, said that in the past 24 hours Russian forces had made 281 attacks along the Bakhmut axis. The Kremlin-linked businessman, who has been hit with western sanctions, dismissed claims that Ukrainian forces were deserting frontlines en masse in Soledar. “Let’s be honest with ourselves. The Ukrainian army is bravely fighting for Bakhmut and Soledar. Reports of their mass desertion are not true,” Prigozhin said, as cited by his press office on Telegram.
In his nightly address on Monday, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, again underlined the difficulty of his forces’ position in Soledar, saying troops were withstanding “new and even tougher assaults”, with some speculating he may be preparing public opinion for the loss of the town.

Severe damage to ‘critical infrastructure’ has affected heavy vehicle operatorsNational Heavy Vehicle Regulator spokesman Steven Miller says there’s been “a lot of damage to critical infrastructure” from the recent flooding in Western Australia. “Very, very challenging for our long-haul heavy freight operators, and we’ve been doing what we can by putting temporary emergency routes in place to assist them,” he told Sky News Australia. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator has also given notice until the 28th of February for heavy vehicle operators to use different routes to reach flood-affected areas to deliver critical supplies. “The temporary notice allows us to operate larger than normal road trains out of Western Australia and through South Australia up into the Northern Territory and northern Western Australia where these critical goods are needed for these impacted communities,” Mr Miller said.
