A new Russian school textbook has sparked controversy by comparing the ongoing war in Ukraine to the Soviet Union's fight against Nazi Germany and claiming that Russia was 'forced' to invade Ukraine.

A new school textbook that draws parallels between Russia's war in Ukraine and the Soviet struggle against Nazi Germany, and asserts that Russia was 'forced' to send troops into Ukraine, was unveiled in Moscow on Monday. President Vladimir Putin has framed the war, which Moscow officially designates as a 'Special Military Operation,' as a necessary and difficult fight against a Western- and NATO -backed Ukraine.

He contends that it is part of a broader existential battle against a decadent West attempting to weaken and dismantle Russia. Conversely, Ukraine and its Western allies maintain that Russia is conducting a brutal and unprovoked war solely for territorial gain. The three-volume 'Military History of Russia' was edited by Vladimir Medinsky, a close associate of Putin who led a delegation in unsuccessful peace talks with Ukraine in 2022, during the war's early stages. Medinsky has also co-authored Russia's primary history textbook. The third volume, intended for students aged 15 and above, is likely to be dismissed by Ukrainian authorities as propaganda. It aims to explain the Kremlin's rationale for the war's initiation and conduct, highlight what it considers battlefield acts of heroism, and describe how the modern Russian army is occasionally employing tactics used by the Soviet army during World War Two.In a chapter titled 'Professionalism, indomitability and courage: Russian troops in the Special Military Operation,' the book informs students that Russia was 'forced' to deploy its troops in Ukraine in 2022. It attributes the war's outbreak to the West's years of disregard for Russia's security concerns, citing NATO's eastward expansion and the purported Western-instigated removal of a Russia-friendly Ukrainian president in 2014, which, according to the book, transformed Ukraine into an 'aggressive anti-Russian bridgehead.' NATO and Ukraine vehemently deny any threats posed to Russia. Speaking at a TASS news conference to discuss the new book, Ivan Basik, a military historian associated with the Russian army, stated that Western and Ukrainian actions made the war 'inevitable.' 'The most important task was to explain to the younger generation, to schoolchildren, the forced nature of the special military operation carried out by the Russian Federation,' he declared. — Reuter
